In his talk, Resnick describes Scratch, the programming software that he and a research group at MIT Media Lab developed to allow people to easily create and share their own interactive games and animations. Below, find 10 more places you can learn to code, incorporating Resnick’s suggestions and our own.
  1. At Codecademy, you can take lessons on writing simple commands in JavaScript, HTML and CSS, Python and Ruby. (See this New York Times piece from last March, on Codecademy and other code-teaching sites, for a sense of the landscape.)
    .
  2. One of many programs geared toward females who want to code, Girl Develop It is an international nonprofit that provides mentorship and instruction. “We are committed to making sure women of all ages, races, education levels, income, and upbringing can build confidence in their skill set to develop web and mobile applications,” their website reads. “By teaching women around the world from diverse backgrounds to learn software development, we can help women improve their careers and confidence in their everyday lives.”
    .
  3. Stanford University’s Udacity is one of many sites that make college courses—including Introduction to Computer Science—available online for free. (See our post on free online courses for more ideas.)
    .
  4. If college courses seem a little slow, consider Code Racer, a “multi-player live coding game.” Newbies can learn to build a website using HTML and CSS, while the more experienced can test their adeptness at coding.
    .
  5. The Computer Clubhouse, which Resnick co-founded, works to “help young people from low-income communities learn to express themselves creatively with new technologies,” as he describes. According to Clubhouse estimates, more than 25,000 kids work with mentors through the program every year.
    .
  6. Through CoderDojo’s volunteer-led sessions, young people can learn to code, go on tours of tech companies and hear guest speakers. (Know how to code? You can set up your own CoderDojo!)
    .
  7. Code School offers online courses in a wide range of programming languages, design and web tools.
    .
  8. Similarly, Treehouse (the parent site of Code Racer) provides online video courses and exercises to help you learn technology skills.
    .
  9. Girls Who Code, geared specifically toward 13- to 17-year-old girls, pairs instruction and mentorship to “educate, inspire and equip” students to pursue their engineering and tech dreams. “Today, just 3.6% of Fortune 500 companies are led by women, and less than 10% of venture capital-backed companies have female founders. Yet females use the internet 17% more than their male counterparts,” the website notes.
    .
  10. Through workshops for young girls of color, Black Girls Code aims to help address the “dearth of African-American women in science, technology, engineering and math professions,” founder Kimberly Bryant writes, and build “a new generation of coders, coders who will become builders of technological innovation and of their own futures.”
While we’re at it: bonus! General Assembly offers a variety of coding courses at their campuses across the globe. Additionally, their free online platform, Dash, teaches HTML, CSS and Javascript through fun projects on a simple interface that is accessible from your web browser.

Well, I ran into all this while I was looking to see if there was a movie, a TV, or a play made from Plato's "Georgia's". I wish to hear those people talking. Their dialog is so beautiful. My reading is too slow. So, if any one of you run into something like that, please let me know.

Virtue.  -- Word of the week.  You have to do anything I ask you to do until your paper is accepted with satisfaction.  Meanwhile, we may discuss, research, and debate.

What are you going to put on your list of virtue? In deed I have been neglecting you girls.  Let me hurry to make it up to you, for your future sake.

It is not just the Word of the week, of the month, of the year...  it is the word of the Life.

How I have failed as a Mother!!!

Did you girls tell me that I was the best mommy in the world?  Think again.

The Era of Movie Night with Mommy ends

5/24/2014 6:20 AM

Girls,

I have trouble putting you two together to watch a movie with me these days.

This is not a complain. This is marking of a milestone of your development, for both of you. Nana is ready to grow up, to test her power, and to claim her rights. You need to reduce the use of your kidlike method for resolving issues -- using physical fights. And Lily need to advance towards adulthood, treating things with more fairness and loving intention. You need to acquire these quality to properly treat your loved ones in the future, your husband and your children.

I am not going to force you to tolerate each other. But I will try to teach you guys how to find ways to get along with each other. If you both grow towards your next phase of your development, we will be able to find that way. This would be a good learning process. Being able to get along with different people is a truly useful skill that would benefit your entire life.

I am going to be Nana's debating coach, train you both for more precise and fair thinking. I want you both to win your debate with kindness, and lose your debate with gratitude. After all, only sincerity can bring out the truth, only the truth can earn respect and gain you a life long friendship from anyone you want. Only those connection worth your devotion, and only those can support you when you go through hard time.

I'm glad you both are willing to try to use a different manner to communicate. It will be a challenge to learn communication using different method. There will be struggles, I promise. But I would hope to have more and more fun as we get better at it. It will be worthy of the effort. Whatever will be will be. But we are not going to give it up without trying our best.

Maybe this is what Dan meant when he said that I am neglecting you guys. He is right. I should not just let you guys work it out between the two of you. You both don't know enough how to. I should be there guiding you. Your future should not be the product of inexperienced battle. There is a better way to manage our environment, by treating it with kindness, empathy, understanding, acceptance, forgiveness and mercifulness. You will create a warm environment for yourself. This is not to say that you should let undeserving people take advantage of your kindness.

Here is an interesting blog of a related quote from Emerson's "Nominalist and Realist."
http://bostonunitarian.blogspot.com/2012/03/finish-every-day.html

"Finish every day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be cumbered with your old nonsense. This day is all that is good and fair. It is too dear, with its hopes and invitations to waste a moment on yesterdays."
